Michigan Council of Professional Investigators — Board Certified Investigator Written Examination
Your exam is assembled at random for you from the MCPI question bank, so applicants do not receive the same items in the same order.
The standard examination contains 100 items — a mix of multiple choice and true/false — and each item is worth one point. Every item has exactly one best answer.
You have 1 hour 30 minutes to complete the examination. Your exact limit, including any approved accommodation, is confirmed on your exam access screen before you begin.
The countdown starts the moment you begin and cannot be paused, stopped or extended. When the time expires, your examination is submitted automatically with the answers you have recorded.
A score of 70% or higher is required to pass. The passing standard was established by the MCPI board through a documented standard-setting process.
Your score is not displayed when you finish. Every attempt is reviewed by MCPI — including your identity confirmation and the integrity record for the session — before results are released to you.
Before you begin, you will be asked to confirm your identity. You can take a photo of your photo ID and a live photo of yourself using your camera, upload images of both, or have a proctor confirm your ID in person at the testing location.
Photos you provide are stored privately and are used only to verify your identity for this examination. They are not shared publicly.
Your examination session is monitored. Switching tabs or windows, losing focus, and copy or paste attempts are timestamped and recorded. These records are reviewed by MCPI and may result in your attempt being voided.
Your answers are saved automatically as you work, so you can recover from most interruptions.
If you have an approved testing accommodation, it is already applied to your examination and is reflected in the time limit shown when you begin. Contact MCPI before your exam if you believe an accommodation is missing.
You may take the examination twice per calendar year. After an unsuccessful or voided attempt, a retake may only be taken on or after the retake date set by MCPI — your exam link will tell you if a retake is not yet available.
